Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit school after three years of study and became a teachers' aide. She began her career as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. In Roots' show she showed herself to be an artist. She then secured collaborations, for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was able to perform during the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first signing artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
